Learn to Knit and Crochet

These beginner classes are geared toward those who have never knit or crocheted before. If you have had a small amount of experience, or want to brush up rusty skills, you are most welcome to join us, but please know that these classes start at the very beginning!

Stripey Scarf: Grab a few of your favorite colors, then mix 'em up in this easy scarf while learning the basics of knitting! This class is for those with no knitting experience. We'll get you going!

Early Fall Class: 3 sessions, Mon. eves., 6:00-8:00 p.m., beginning Aug. 30 (no class on Labor Day).

Fall Class: 3 sessions, Thurs. eves., 6:00-8:00 p.m., beginning Nov. 4. $25 + materials.

Easy Hat: Choose a thick, earflap style or a lighter-weight slouchy beanie. We've got your hat style covered! You'll learn the knitting skills you need to make the hand-knit hats you and all your friends want, so let's get stitchin'! 3 sessions, Thurs. eves., 6:00-8:00 p.m., beginning Oct. 14. $25 + materials.

Crochet Baby: Work on your basic crochet stitches while making a sweet layette for a special baby. Choose a blanket, sweater, cap, booties, or do them all! We'll support you all the way! 4 sessions, Mon. eves., 6:00-8:00 p.m., beginning Nov. 8. $35 + materials.

Workshops & Other Topics

Traditional Rug Hooking: Enjoy learning the basics of this wonderful American craft: pattern design, making the loops, finishing techniques. 3 sessions, Thurs. eves., 6:00-8:00, beginning Sept. 23. $25 + materials. (Kits will be available)

Recycled Fiber Art Workshops! Learn to make t-shirt yarn with Shona.. All skill levels welcome. Upcycle your boring stash yarn into something really cool! Julie will show you how. Basic spinning skills are necessary. Recycled Sweater Workshop: turn old sweaters into groovy stuff! All skill levels welcome. Sat., Sept. 25: T-shirt yarn: 10-12; Upcycled yarn: 1-3; Sun, Sept. 26: Recycled Sweaters: 1-3. $10/workshop.

Celebrate Spinning & Weaving Week with us, Oct. 2-9. We are offering beginner classes this week:

Learn to Weave on a Rigid Heddle Loom: a fun introduction to the basics of weaving on a simple loom. You will create a small project in this two day workshop and gain foundational knowledge of the craft. Sat., Oct. 2, from 10-3 (with lunch break), and Sun., Oct. 3, from 12-4. $65, includes materials.

Learn to Spin on a Drop Spindle: We will practice the ancient craft of turning wool fiber into yarn as we discuss fiber preparation, adding the right amount of twist, plying and other topics. Saturday, Oct. 9, 10:00 - 12:00. $10 + materials.

Lace Knitting from a Chart: A quick and dirty tutorial on lace knitting as we work through a charted pattern and begin a chunky lace cowl. Saturday, Oct. 30, 12:00-3:00. $10 + materials.

Knitting & Crochet Project Classes

My Nora Gaughan Sweater: Talented knitwear designer, Nora Gaughan, has been filling the knitter's landscape with wonderfully inventive sweaters for many years. But her two most recent publications for Berocco Yarns have presented some of her most beautiful and wearable sweaters ever. Create Laccaria, as Tammy has, or choose another of Nora's designs that perfectly fits your lifestyle. 6 sessions, Thurs. eves., beginning Sept. 23, 6:00-8:00 p.m. $50 + materials.

Top-Down Hoodie: This is sure to be your favorite week-end, knock around sweater. And it will be as fun to knit as it is to wear with its top-down, no-seams construction. You may need one in every color, so join us quick! 6 sessions: Mon. eves, beginning Sept. 27, 6:00-8:00 p.m. $50 + materials.

Slip Stitch Scarf: This is the fun and easy way to play with color. Slip stitch patterns look as intricate as fair-isle, but you work with only one color per row. You'll love this technique that makes you look like a color master! 2 sessions, Sat. afternoons. beginning Oct. 2, 1:00-3:00 p.m. $15 + materials.

Slip Stitch Hat: Get going on the hat to match the Slip Stitch Scarf! One afternoon will get you off to a great start on this adorable, fun hat. 1 session, Sat. afternoon, from 1:00-3:00, on Oct. 23. $10 + materials.

Crochet a Hat Without a Pattern! Are you the type that likes to wing it? That's perfect. Don't worry about your yarn size or gauge; Julie will share some tips and techniques for making your hats fit as you crochet up a hat using your basic crochet stitches. 2 sessions, Mon. eves., beginning Oct. 4, from 6:00-8:00. $15 + materials.

Please note that we now have Early Bird Classes. We thought some folks might love starting their Fridays with coffee, something from the bakery, and knitting! Our Early Bird topics this fall are mittens and socks, or a Christmas stocking if you like. If you would enjoy an early morning class, do come!

Early Bird Mittens: Absolutely nothing beats hand-knit mittens, especially in Montana. Learn how easy a basic mitten is to make and you (& friends & family) will be cozy until spring! 2 sessions, Friday mornings, 7:30-9:00, beginning Oct. 8. $15 + materials.

My Easy Swing Pullover: This cozy sweater with its gentle flattering shape and easy garter stitch pattern is the perfect my first sweater to knit! We'll learn about measuring, gauge, seaming, blocking and many more important techniques for creating a garment that you'll love to wear! 6 sessions; Monday. eves., beginning Oct. 18, 6:00-8:00. $50 + materials.

Early Bird Sock/Christmas Stocking: Well, which is it? Actually, it's either...or both. Most Christmas stockings follow a basic sock pattern; you just knit them very large! This class is all about basic sock knitting techniques; you choose the sock or stocking that suits your fancy. 3 sessions: Friday mornings, from 7:30-9:00, beginning Oct. 22. $25 + materials.

Felted Clogs: A perennial favorite! Knit the classic Fiber Trends clog pattern that everyone wants. Get in gear for the holidays; you might be making a lot of these. 3 sessions: Thursday eves., from 6:00-8:00, beginning Nov. 4. $25 + materials.

Easy Cowl: Cowls are big this season (literally and figuratively) and so easy to create by knitting in the round. Not sure how to get started? We'll give you some pointers, and you'll be whipping out cowls for all your friends for the holidays. 1 session: Monday eve., Nov. 29, from 6:00-8:00. $10 plus materials.
